Larry Sherman, recording engineer and founder of the seminal Chicago house label Trax Records, has died. The label announced the news in a statement on its social media accounts earlier today (April 9).

“It is with great sadness that Trax Records and Rachael Cain must announce the passing of Larry Sherman its legendary founder,” the label wrote. “Larry is survived by his beloved daughter Tessa Sherman and his widow Sandy Sherman. I ask that everyone please send LOVE AND PRAYERS. He was of the Jewish faith and passed away on his holiday Passover.”

Sherman founded Trax in 1984 after buying Chicago’s Precision Pressing vinyl plant. Trax went on to release now-legendary house singles by Frankie Knuckles, Larry Heard, Adonis, Marshall Jefferson, Phuture, and many others. The label has long been considered one of the birthplaces of acid house, and continues to influence contemporary music. Many of Trax’s releases have been sampled by Kanye West, Drake, and more. Trax is now run by Screamin’ Rachael Cain—one of the first artists Trax signed.
