Every generation likes to think it wrote the best pop songs, but those who came of musical age in the 1970s and 1980s have data on their side.

Tracks released in these decades enjoyed a boost in popularity on streaming services last year, as fans of all ages sought out old favourites by Sir Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, the Bee Gees and others.

Hits from the Seventies accounted for 7.6 per cent of all “back catalogue” audio streams in 2019, an increase on the previous year.
