At the risk of undermining the purpose of this page and stating the bleeding obvious, there are no single cultural artefacts or practitioners that I prefer to all others of their kind. Given that . . . an author to whom I have often returned is Christopher Norris. His writings on philosophy and music have enlightened and perplexed me for 40 years. In his retirement he has taken to writing verse essay poems on philosophy and philosophers in a distinctly “un-modish” style. He says the strictures of rhyme force the semantic imagination in ways that free verse does not. Which is interesting for us “Moon in July” songwriters.
