When Julie Felix arrived in Britain in 1964 she brought with her nothing more than a guitar, a duffel bag and the dust of the road from two years spent hitching her way around Europe. Born in California, she was 26 and with her long black hair, high cheekbones and pure, soaring voice, she might have been mistaken for the twin sister of Joan Baez, the reigning queen of American folk music.

The British folk scene had nobody to match and Felix filled the gap admirably. Despite her American accent, Britain embraced her as its own and she was an almost instant success. Swiftly signed by Decca Records, she was promoted as “the first big breakthrough on the British folk scene’’.
