His distinctive nasal tone and body of work is known to millions, so it may come as a surprise that Bob Dylan has never had a No 1 single before now — and even more of a surprise that his first chart topper is a 17-minute track about the assassination of JFK.

The folk singer and Nobel laureate has come close to No 1 with some arguably more memorable songs: Like a Rolling Stone and Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 made it to No 2 on the Hot 100 in 1965 and 1966 respectively.

The release of Murder Most Foul prompted amazement and some amusement. It sold 10,000 digital downloads in its first week, was streamed 1.8 million times, and entered at No 1
